Gel nail polish

20150416_094653

You might guess I’m away at the moment with these holiday related posts! At home I prefer ‘regular’ nail polish as I like to change my colour often, but when I’m on holiday I always opt for gel colour. Gel (for the few that don’t know) is a semi-permanent polish that doesn’t chip or peel. It is painted on to the nails and each coat is set under a UV or LED lamp (depending on the brand of polish) it dries to hard immediately and cannot be removed with regular nail varnish remover.

Gel is great if you don’t have time to regularly change your polish, it also keeps it’s shine for the duration of wear too. I like it for holidays because it doesn’t dull or yellow in the sun and no amount of swimming will make the gel peel.

There is a lot of talk about whether gel polish damages your nails and the answer is yes and no. Helpful! Yes if the nails are buffed too heavily pre-application or if it is applied too thickly- and therefore difficult to remove (the nails need to be soaked in drying acetone to remove the gel). No if the gel is applied well and removed gently. Also different brands can suit different people…..

One of the most popular and well known gels, Shellac, does not agree with me at all; it removes beautifully but leaves my nails incredibly dry (Please note: I am in the minority here, most people love Shellac). A good all-rounder is the Artistic gel and their colour range is growing (they seem to have a lot of colours that are similar to popular Essie colours). Biosculpture is the original gel colour and if applied well (you really need a good nail technician for Biosculpture) it is stunning and the most hard wearing of all the gels. My gel of choice is the ever faithful OPI! The application is quick as it can be set with an LED light (20 second cure time rather than a UV 2 minutes) it is a thin polish and it removes with minimal soaking time.

The colour I have on in the picture is OPI Alpine Snow and this is after 2 weeks wear! You can see it’s grown out a lot but it is still shiny and in tact- no lifting, peeling or chips! Perfecto!

Sun protection UVA UVB SPF ETC ETC!

20150411_125023I am from the generation who can remember when fake tans were awful, a certain sunbed shop chain was an acceptable place to go (the maximum exposure time was 15 mins) and having a tan was everything.

Fast forward a few years and our pigmentated faces and chests are testament to our naivety. Gutted. On the plus side; fake tans are now excellent (and varied), knowledge is power and pale can be interesting.

UV exposure is the single most ageing element on our skin, bar none. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the sun but as with most things in life, it’s all about moderation. In a recent poll, it has emerged that uneven pigmentation (brown spots) is aesthetically more ageing than lines or wrinkles. UV pigmentation can be dramatically reduced/prevented by using spf with UVA and UVB protection  *hormone related pigmentation is a different topic which I will blog about later.

PIZ BUIN 1 DAY LONG SPF30: This is a high quality product, as you would expect with Piz Buin, it has the all important UVA and UVB protection and it is enriched with an antioxidant to further defend against premature skin ageing. It is massively moisturising without feeling at all sticky. Skin is left feeling smooth, silky and protected! The only downfalls for me are that it is only an SPF30 (I personally prefer spf50 for me) and the bottle is on the small side, 100ml, if applied generously (to ensure protection) 1 bottle will not last a full ‘beach-holiday-week’. Despite this, I would definitely buy again .

GARNIER AMBRE SOLARE CLEAR PROTECT+ UVA3 UVB SPF50: This spray does exactly as it says it will, high protection, quick absorption, non-greasy, water resistant and has a transparent finish. It is a really good all rounder. I think it will suit the sporty holiday makers or people who hate the feel of product on their skin. It has quite a strong ‘chemical type scent’ though so it wasn’t a favourite of mine (smell is a big thing for me; not too perfumed, not too plain, definitely not chemical). On the whole though, this is a good product and is good value for money.

LA ROCHE-POSAY ANTHELIOS XL UVA UVB SPF50+ TINTED FLUID: This is a year round favourite for me, it ticks all the right skincare boxes. It has the all important high protection but it is also ultra-light and tinted! The fluid is so light that it is possible to wear your face serum beneath it and it still won’t feel heavy on the skin. The tint colour is fairly universal, I would say it would blend with most complexions from Fitzpatric 2-4 (quite pale to olive). For people like me who are used to wearing make-up daily, a tinted sun cream makes a bare-faced trip to the beach much less daunting! I wear this spf throughout the year (tinted version in summer, plain version under make-up in winter) I am fully aware that we need some skin/sun exposure to boost our vitamin D levels but this doesn’t need to be via our faces! Hands, arms, legs all do the job too! This is definitely my suncream winner.

BENEFIT Roller Lash mascara

1428428527733-157871797

How very considerate of Benefit to launch the most amazing mascara at the same time as I finally started my blog!

I am VERY hard to please when it comes to mascaras, I consider myself a person who ‘needs’ mascara (if Boris Becker was looking for an eyelash twin, I think I could be it). I have lots of lashes but they are fine and straight, very straight. I want my mascara to thicken my lashes without clumping, darken my lashes without flaking or smudging, and most importantly define my lashes!

Roller Lash does all of this and more. I apply two coats in the morning; it glides on effortlessly coating every lash and lifts the lashes into a perfect curl (hence the name Roller Lash!). It lasts all day without any flaking or panda eyes. It lasts so well that if you were going out straight from work with no time to re-do your make up, you can just apply another coat over the top of what you already have on and it STILL won’t clump! Dream mascara!

At £19.50 it’s not cheap (especially when a previous favourite of mine is £2.99!) but it is honestly worth every single penny. I think of it as spending more in pocket but saving more in time; no need for eyelash curlers, extra coats, combing through clumps or cleaning up smears! Or does that just sound like a good excuse to spend?! Either way, you can tell, I am very happy with my Roller Lash(es)!

P.S don’t be put off by the ‘plastic’ brush, it’s great (I usually prefer a bristle brush)

There’s a new beauty blog in town…..yes another one…..!

Hello and welcome to my blog!

This has been a long time coming; I decided to start my own beauty blog 7 years ago and (punctuality not being my strong point) so it begins!

My original plan was a kind of ‘Hotel Babylon’ for beauty (the Spa version if you will) detailing the day-to-day occurrences within spas and salons; there is many a funny/cringe-worthy/icky story to tell but none without betraying any client trust, so I shelved the idea.

Fast forward a few years, and beauty blogs are huge! (stating the obvious I know). With the vast array of products available to us, it makes sense that so many of us now make our beauty purchases based on reviews from bloggers in the know. My aim is to be your new ‘helper/adviser/blogger/friend’ (delete as appropriate) for all your skincare and make up needs! Big talk!

I have worked, hands-on in the beauty biz for 17 years, from small boutique spas and clinics, to 5* Hotels, and in more recent years as a successful Make-Up Artist. I am a qualified (and experienced) beauty therapist, skin specialist and make-up artist, I fully understand typical skin conditions and how to correct/avoid/hide them! I also understand beauty products and their ingredients and how they can benefit us…..or not. With all these years of experience and know-how, I will be trialling beauty products and make-up and giving you my honest review of them to help you make informed decisions before you part with your hard earned cash. I am open to any beauty questions and suggestions of products to review.

So, as I said, ‘big talk’! Let’s hope I live up to it!
